The fee under the fee

When a platform advertises "0% revenue share," it means the platform takes no cut — not that monetizing is free. Nearly every newsletter tool processes paid subscriptions through Stripe, and Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on top of whatever the platform itself charges. That payment-processing layer is the one fee almost nobody escapes, and it's why two platforms can both say "0%" and still cost you money on every subscriber you bill.

The platforms we track fall into three patterns for how that processing fee shows up. Knowing which pattern you're in is the difference between an advertised rate and what actually lands in your account.

The three patterns

Pattern one — platform cut plus Stripe on top. Substack is the example: it takes 10% of subscription revenue, and Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 still applies, plus an extra 0.7% recurring-billing fee. So for a subscriber paying $10/month, the headline "10%" becomes an effective 16.6% of gross once processing is counted. The mechanics are in how much Substack actually costs.

Pattern two — 0% cut, Stripe still applies. beehiiv, Ghost, and Buttondown all take 0% of subscription revenue and charge a flat plan fee instead, but you still pay Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 on every payment. "0%" here means zero platform cut, not zero processing.

Pattern three — bundled. Kit Commerce charges 3.5% + $0.30 per transaction on paid products and subscriptions, and that fee *includes* payment processing — there's no separate Stripe charge. What it costs in dollars

Take a newsletter grossing $2,000/month — 200 subscribers paying $10/month. On a plain-Stripe platform like Ghost or Buttondown, the processing fee alone is $118/month (2.9% of $2,000 plus $0.30 across 200 transactions). That number is the same on beehiiv, Ghost, and Buttondown, because processing is driven by your revenue, not by which flat-fee plan you're on.

Substack's recurring-billing fee pushes its processing to $132/month for the same newsletter — and that's before its 10% cut. Kit, by contrast, shows $0 in separate processing because its 3.5% + $0.30 commerce fee ($130/month here) already has processing baked in. Model the all-in number for any platform in the calculator.

The levers that change it

Two things move the processing bill. The first is billing frequency: that $0.30-per-transaction charge hits once per payment, so a subscriber on an annual plan is one transaction a year instead of twelve — a list that skews annual pays far less in per-transaction fees than a monthly-billing assumption suggests. The second is who holds the Stripe account. On a platform like Buttondown, payments flow through your own Stripe, so the processing relationship — and any volume discounts you negotiate — is directly yours.
